I recently switched to GDM from LightDM on Ubuntu 16.04. However when I try to boot up the system gets stuck at Started Update UTMP about System Runlevel Changes, and the boot process stops.Tags : 16.04 boot gnome xorg gdm. Since I last upgraded my Lenny box, both xdm and gdm silently fail to start at boot time. Actually, something in each of their init scripts fails and they are never actually called. If I run /usr/sbin/ gdm directly they both work fine. I have made a fresh Ubuntu GNOME 16.04.1 install through USB and there were no problems during the first boot.Nothing worked. in tty1, issuing sudo startx starts my display manager with root as the current user. GDM can be installed with the gdm package, and it is installed as part of the gnome group. To start GDM at boot time enable gdm.
